The Herschell .C. Developer is the final, critical stage (Step 3) of the three-part Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Flaw Detection System. It is a white, powdery suspension in a fast-drying solvent. Its primary job is to act as a "blotter," drawing the red dye out of surface-breaking cracks to make them highly visible against a stark white background.
Technical Specifications
- Base: Fine white absorbent powder in a high-evaporation solvent.
- Color: Opaque White.
- Drying Time: Very rapid (leaves a dry, matte white film).
- Volume: 400ml Aerosol.
- Standard Compliance: Formulated to meet international welding and engineering safety standards for flaw detection.
Key Features
- Magnification Effect: The developer doesn't just show the crack; it "bleeds" the red dye into the white powder, making a microscopic hairline fracture appear as a much wider, bright red line that is impossible to miss.
- High Contrast: Provides a brilliant white, non-reflective matte finish that is ideal for both visual inspection and photographic documentation of defects.
- Even Coverage: The aerosol spray ensures a fine, uniform mist, which is essential for accurate results. A "clumpy" or thick application can actually bury small defects.
- Easy Cleanup: Once the inspection is complete, the dry white powder can be easily brushed off or wiped away with a cloth and Herschell .A. Weld Cleaner.
The Full Inspection Sequence
- Step A (Cleaner): Clean the surface thoroughly to remove grease and dirt.
- Step B (Penetrant): Apply the red dye and allow it to "dwell" (soak) for 5–20 minutes. Wipe off the excess dye from the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with cleaner.
- Step C (Developer): Shake the can vigorously and spray a thin, even coat of white developer over the area.
- Inspection: Watch the white surface. If red spots or lines appear within a few minutes, a crack or porosity has been detected.
Usage Tips
- The "Thin Coat" Rule: Do not over-apply. You only need enough to turn the metal surface white. If the developer is dripping, you have applied too much and may mask the results.
- Shake Well: The white solids settle at the bottom of the can. If you don't shake it until the mixing ball rattles loudly, you will only spray clear solvent.
- Interpretation Time: Wait at least 7–10 minutes after spraying the developer for the "bleed out" to fully occur, as deep or very tight cracks take longer to show.
