The Pro-Close Brown Plastic Garden Tap is a durable, UV-stabilized outdoor water outlet designed specifically for the harsh South African climate. Unlike traditional brass taps, the high-impact plastic construction makes it a theft-deterrent solution for residential gardens, smallholdings, and communal wash areas in the Heidelberg – GP region.
Technical Specifications
- Inlet Thread: 15mm (1/2″) Male BSP (Standard wall-mount size).
- Outlet Thread: 20mm (3/4″) Male BSP (Standard for garden hose connectors).
- Material: UV-Stabilized Polypropylene / Engineering Plastic.
- Mechanism: Multi-turn rising spindle with a replaceable rubber washer.
- Color: Industrial Brown (UV-resistant pigment).
- Pressure Rating: Suitable for standard municipal and Cascade Pressure Pump systems (up to 600 kPa).
Key Performance Features
- Theft Deterrent: Because it contains no brass or copper, it has zero scrap metal value. This is a critical security feature for exposed boundary walls or open-access community gardens.
- UV Protection: The brown polymer is specifically treated to resist the intense Gauteng sun, preventing the body from becoming “chalky” or brittle during the dry Winter Bulk 2026 season.
- Corrosion Resistance: 100% rust-proof and resistant to the mineral-heavy water conditions often found in borehole and municipal supplies.
- Lightweight & Robust: The reinforced plastic body is designed to withstand high-impact use while being significantly lighter than metal alternatives, reducing stress on 50mm Nylon Fittings or poly-pipe wall-mounts.
- Standard Hose Compatibility: The 3/4″ male outlet thread fits all standard quick-connect hose fittings, Kaufmann spray nozzles, and 20mm tap-to-hose adaptors.
Installation & Professional Tips
- Thread Preparation: Apply 10–12 wraps of PTFE Pipe Thread Tape to the 15mm inlet thread. Ensure the tape is wrapped clockwise to prevent it from bunching up as you screw the tap into the wall-plate or elbow.
- Hand-Tighten Only: Plastic threads can be damaged by excessive force. Screw the tap in by hand until firm, then use a Kaufmann shifting spanner for a final half-turn to align the outlet vertically.
- Washer Maintenance: If the tap begins to drip, the internal 15mm washer can be replaced just like a standard brass tap. Use a Tap Reseating Tool very gently if the plastic seat becomes scaled, though a simple washer swap usually suffices.
- Winter Protection: During the Winter Bulk 2026 freezing spells, it is advisable to drain the attached hose. While the plastic body has some flex, standing water frozen inside the tap can still cause the housing to crack.
- Alignment: If installing on a 15mm poly-pipe riser, ensure the pipe is secured with a saddle clamp within 100mm of the tap to prevent the pipe from flexing when the tap is operated.
Common Use Cases
- Garden Irrigation: Providing a reliable point for hose pipes and Kaufmann 16L Knapsack Sprayer filling.
- Agricultural Wash-bays: Durable outlets for cleaning equipment or livestock buckets.
- Temporary Sites: Cost-effective water points for Easter 2026 event setups or construction sites.
- Low-Security Areas: Replacing brass taps in areas prone to theft or vandalism.
Pro Tip: To give the installation a professional look, use a brown plastic wall-flange to hide the entry point into the wall. If the tap handle becomes stiff over time, a small drop of Spanjaard Silicone Grease on the spindle threads (inside the headwork) will make it feel brand new and prevent the plastic threads from wearing prematurely.
