Dromex FFP (Filtering Face Piece) dust masks are the gold standard for respiratory protection in South African industrial and DIY settings. When you see the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) mark on a Dromex mask, it confirms the product meets the SANS 50149:2003 national standard for respiratory safety.
Key Features of Dromex Masks
- Pre-shaped Nose Bridge: Most models include a foam seal and an adjustable aluminum nose clip to ensure a tight fit (preventing glasses from fogging).
- Valve vs. Non-Valved: * Valved (Dromex 1021/2021): Features a “cool-flow” valve that lets hot air out, making it much more comfortable for long shifts.
- Non-Valved: Cheaper, but can get hot and humid inside.
- Twin Elastic Straps: Designed to provide even pressure for a secure seal around the face.
Important Safety Checklist
- The Seal Test: After putting the mask on, cup your hands over it and exhale sharply. If air escapes around your nose or cheeks, the mask is not protecting you. Adjust the straps or nose clip.
- Facial Hair: SABS/SANS standards specify that these masks cannot provide a perfect seal over a beard. For full protection, the skin must be clean-shaven where the mask touches the face.
- Disposable: These are “Single Use” masks. Once the filter becomes clogged (making it hard to breathe) or the inside becomes damp, it must be discarded.
