Herschell Garage Door & Marine Grease is a high-performance, Calcium-Lithium complex lubricant specifically engineered for environments where water resistance and "tackiness" are the top priorities. This 500g tub contains a heavy-duty grease that stays in place on vertical tracks and resists being washed away by rain, sea spray, or high-pressure cleaning.
Technical Specifications
- Base: Calcium-Lithium thickener (Hybrid for superior water-blocking).
- Consistency: NLGI 2 (Medium-firm).
- Color: Usually White or Off-White (allows for easy inspection of contamination).
- Temperature Range: -20°C to +140°C.
- Water Washout: < 5% (Excellent resistance to water stripping).
Key Features
- Extreme Water Resistance: The Calcium component makes this grease almost completely waterproof, preventing rust on boat trailers and marine equipment even when submerged.
- High Adhesion ("Tack"): Formulated to be "stringy" so it clings to moving parts. This prevents the grease from dripping off overhead garage door tracks onto your car or garage floor.
- Anti-Corrosion Additives: Contains specialized inhibitors to neutralize the corrosive effects of salt air and salt water.
- Silences Noise: Provides a thick damping layer that significantly reduces the "chatter" and metal-on-metal grinding noise of automated garage door systems.
Common Applications
- Garage Doors: Lubricating side tracks, heavy-duty springs, pivot points, and the drive screw/chain of automated openers.
- Marine: Trailer wheel bearings (especially those backed into the sea), winch gears, outboard motor pivot brackets, and steering linkages.
- Industrial: Exposed gears and chains in wet processing plants or outdoor bottling facilities.
- Home Maintenance: Sliding gate tracks, external hinges, and pool pump O-rings (ensure compatibility with your specific rubber type).
Usage Tips
- Avoid Over-Greasing Tracks: On garage doors, you only need a thin film on the inside of the track where the rollers travel. Too much grease will eventually trap dust and hair, creating a "sludge" that can strain the motor.
- Spring Maintenance: For torsion springs (the big ones above the door), wipe a light layer of grease across the coils to prevent "spring bind" and rust, which are the leading causes of spring failure.
- Clean Surface: Before applying, use a degreaser to remove old, gritty lubricant. Applying fresh grease over old dirt acts like liquid sandpaper.
- Marine Bearings: If using for boat trailer bearings, ensure you fill the hub completely to leave no room for water to enter when the hot hub hits cold water.
