Herschell Gear, Wire & Rope Spray is an extreme-pressure (EP) lubricant specifically engineered for open mechanical systems. It is a bitumen-based lubricant fortified with Molybdenum Disulphide ($MoS_2$), designed to cling to fast-moving parts and penetrate deep into the core of wire ropes to prevent internal friction and corrosion.
Technical Specifications
- Base: Bituminous compounds with extreme-pressure additives.
- Solid Lubricant: Molybdenum Disulphide ($MoS_2$).
- Appearance: Black, tacky, and stringy film.
- Water Resistance: Outstanding (Hydrophobic/Waterproof).
- Volume: 400ml Aerosol.
Key Features
- Deep Penetration: The carrier solvent is highly "searching," allowing the lubricant to travel between the individual strands of a wire rope to protect the inner core from "dry rot" and internal snapping.
- Non-Fling Formula: Once the solvent evaporates, the lubricant becomes extremely tacky. This ensures it stays on high-speed open gears and chains rather than being thrown off by centrifugal force.
- Extreme Pressure (EP) Protection: The addition of Moly ($MoS_2$) provides a secondary layer of dry lubrication. Even if the base film is squeezed out under massive loads, the Moly particles prevent metal-to-metal welding and scuffing.
- Environmental Shield: Forms a thick, black protective "skin" that is impervious to rain, salt water, and mild chemical washdowns, making it ideal for coastal and mining environments.
Common Applications
- Wire Ropes & Cables: Crane hoist ropes, elevator cables, winches, and draglines.
- Open Gears: Large ring gears on cement mixers, crushers, and kilns.
- Chains: Heavy-duty drive chains on agricultural machinery and industrial conveyors.
- Fifth Wheels: Lubricating the coupling plates on heavy-duty truck tractors.
- Exposed Hinges: Massive gate hinges or dock levelers exposed to the elements.
Usage Tips
- Cleaning: For maximum adhesion, remove old, gritty grease and dirt with Herschell .A. Weld Cleaner or a stiff wire brush before applying.
- Application: Shake the can vigorously until the mixing ball rattles. Spray from a distance of 20cm–25cm. It is better to apply two thin coats than one thick, dripping coat.
- Drying Time: Allow the solvent to evaporate (approx. 10–15 minutes) before putting the equipment into operation to ensure the "tack" has fully set.
- Caution: Because this lubricant is black and very sticky, avoid using it on parts that may come into contact with clothing or delicate surfaces, as it is difficult to remove.
