The Matweld Plasma PT31 Long Electrode is a critical consumable for the PT31 plasma torch, commonly used with 30A and 40A plasma cutters. The "Long" variant is specifically designed to extend further from the torch head than standard electrodes, providing significant advantages for manual cutting and specialized geometry.
Key Performance Features
- Extended Reach: The longer profile allows the torch to access tight corners, deep channels, or recessed areas that standard consumables cannot reach.
- Improved Visibility: Many operators prefer the long electrode and tip setup because it provides a better line of sight to the cutting arc when cutting freehand or following a template.
- Double-Sided Design: Some versions of the PT31 long electrode are double-sided; once one end is worn down, the electrode can be flipped over and reused, effectively doubling its service life.
- High Conductivity: Manufactured from copper or copper alloy with a hafnium insert, ensuring a stable, high-temperature arc for precise cuts through mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Maintenance & Operator Tips
- Avoid Blow-Back: To maximize the life of the electrode, ensure the torch is slightly angled away from the workpiece when starting a cut. This allows molten metal to escape rather than blowing back into the torch head and damaging the consumables.
- Standoff Distance: While the long electrode allows for a greater standoff distance, keeping a consistent gap is key to maintaining arc stability and clean cut quality.
- Check for Wear: Inspect the hafnium center regularly. Once the pit in the center reaches approximately 1.5mm to 2mm deep, it is time to flip or replace the electrode to avoid damaging the torch head.
