MTS Wire Binding is a multi-purpose steel wire commonly used in South Africa for construction (fixing rebar), agricultural fencing, and general workshop bundling. It is available in two primary finishes depending on whether you need flexibility or weather resistance.
1. Black Annealed Binding Wire
This is the most common “soft” wire. The annealing process involves heating the steel to make it highly flexible and easy to twist by hand or with pliers without snapping.
- Best For: Tying reinforcing steel (rebar) in concrete work, bundling garden waste, and temporary site repairs.
- Key Advantage: It stays tied securely because of its high “dead-soft” ductility.
- Standard Sizes: Usually sold in 1.6mm (16 gauge) or 2.0mm thicknesses.
2. Galvanised Binding Wire
This wire is coated with a layer of zinc to prevent rust. It is stiffer than the black annealed version but much more durable in outdoor or damp conditions.
- Best For: Agricultural trellising, securing fencing mesh, and outdoor DIY projects.
- Key Advantage: Long-term corrosion resistance against rain and coastal air.
- Standard Sizes: Common in 1.6mm and 2.5mm diameters.
Professional Tips
- Tools: For repetitive tying (like rebar), use an MTS Reel Type Wire Twister or a pair of MTS Tower Pincers to save time and reduce hand strain.
- Storage: Keep Black Annealed wire in a dry area or in its original packaging; because it is “raw” steel, it will begin to surface-rust quickly if exposed to moisture.
