Pelox RPI Passivating Liquid is a high-performance chemical treatment used to restore the protective chromium-oxide layer on stainless steel surfaces. After stainless steel has been welded, grinded, or chemically "pickled," its natural corrosion resistance is temporarily compromised. Applying Pelox RPI ensures the surface is chemically "sealed" and protected against "tea staining" and pitting.
Technical Specifications
- Type: Passivating Liquid (Nitric Acid-based).
- Form: Transparent liquid.
- Container Size: 2kg.
- Reaction Time: 15 – 30 minutes (depending on ambient temperature and grade of steel).
- Coverage: Approximately 15m – 20m per kg.
- Application Method: Spraying, dipping, or wiping.
Key Features
- Instant Protection: Accelerates the formation of the passive layer which would naturally take days to reform. This is critical for installations in high-corrosion areas like coastal regions or chemical plants.
- Surface Cleaning: Removes free iron particles, light oils, and minor atmospheric contaminants that can cause surface rust (cross-contamination) on stainless steel.
- No Surface Etching: Unlike pickling pastes (which remove metal and "dull" the finish), RPI is a non-etching passivator. It maintains the original polished or brushed finish of the steel.
- Versatile Application: The liquid form makes it ideal for treating large surface areas, internal pipework, or complex geometries where a thick paste would be difficult to apply or rinse.
Common Applications
- Post-Pickling: Mandatory step after using Pelox Pickling Paste to ensure the "raw" metal is immediately protected.
- Architectural Stainless: Treating balustrades, signage, and facades after installation to remove tool marks and iron contamination.
- Food & Beverage: Sanitizing and passivating stainless steel vats, brewing equipment, and dairy piping.
- Marine: Maintenance of stainless steel boat fittings (cleats, rails, and anchors) to prevent saltwater pitting.
Usage & Safety Instructions
- Preparation: Ensure the surface is free of heavy grease or scale. If the steel has weld-discoloration (blue/purple), it must be treated with a pickling agent first.
- Application: Apply the liquid evenly using a plastic spray bottle or a clean, acid-resistant cloth.
- Dwell Time: Allow it to react for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not allow the liquid to dry completely on the surface; if it starts to dry in high heat, mist it lightly with water or re-apply a small amount of RPI.
- Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly with high-pressure clean water (preferably demineralized water for a streak-free finish).
- Safety Gear: This product contains Nitric Acid. You must wear acid-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing. Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Waste Management: The rinse water will be acidic. Ensure you follow local environmental regulations regarding the neutralization of effluent before washing it into the drain.
