Herschell Belt Dressing is a specialized industrial treatment designed to restore grip and extend the life of all types of drive belts. Unlike general lubricants, this spray is tacky, not slippery. It is formulated to penetrate the belt fibers, preventing them from drying out while increasing the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley.
Technical Specifications
- Base: Synthetic polymers and tackifiers.
- Appearance: Clear, colorless, and extremely sticky.
- Compatibility: Safe for V-belts, flat belts, and ribbed belts made of rubber, leather, or fabric.
- Volume: 400ml Aerosol.
- Water Resistance: High (Prevents slippage even in damp conditions).
Key Features
- Eliminates Squeaks: Instantly stops the high-pitched "chirping" or "screeching" caused by belt slippage.
- Increases Power Transfer: By eliminating slip, it ensures that 100% of the motor's power is transferred to the driven component (e.g., alternator, water pump, or industrial fan).
- Prevents Glazing: Regular application prevents the belt surface from becoming hard and "glassy" (glazing), which is the primary cause of premature belt failure.
- Conditions & Preserves: Softens the belt material to prevent cracking and fraying, significantly extending the service interval of expensive drive belts.
- Works in All Weather: Effective in both high-heat industrial environments and cold, damp outdoor settings.
Common Applications
- Automotive: Fan belts, alternator belts, and power steering belts (especially useful for older vehicles with manual tensioners).
- Industrial: Conveyor belts, large compressor drives, and HVAC blower units.
- Agriculture: Harvesting machinery, tractor drive belts, and water pumps.
- Home/Workshop: Drill presses, lathes, and table saw drive belts.
Usage Tips
- Safety First: Never apply while the machine is running unless you can do so from a safe distance using the extension straw. Keep fingers and loose clothing far away from moving pulleys.
- Application: Spray a light, even coat onto the inner "V" or gripping surface of the belt. A small amount goes a long way; over-application can cause dirt buildup.
- Temporary Fix vs. Permanent Repair: While Belt Dressing is excellent for conditioning, a persistently squeaking belt may be a sign of a worn-out tensioner or a belt that has stretched beyond its limit. If the noise returns quickly, check the belt tension.
- Cleaning: If you need to remove the dressing, use a strong solvent like Herschell .A. Weld Cleaner or a dedicated degreaser.
